At the BOE’s last business meeting on December 15th, the Board discussed a number of district topics including a presentation of the 2025 Special Education Report, a new policy regarding student privacy, and an update to the Capital Bond Project.
Following the Education Report presented at last month’s meeting, the 2025 Special Education report was shared. This report included the numbers and trends of students in the Special Education program, the services provided in the district for these students, the work that will be done in the future to continue to help educate these students, and the ways in which the Special Education program can assess their work.
Additionally, at this meeting a new policy was introduced, set in by the federal Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment. This policy would give parents the option to opt their children out of surveys that could include topics such as political affiliations, religious practices, income, psychological problems or other various topics.
Similar to the last few meetings, the Capital Bond Project was an important topic discussed. The scope of the project was lowered to below $100M, deferring some projects of lower importance/need to the future and focusing on a less costly, but still fairly distributed bond. Some of the changes include removing renovations of some Edgewood and Fox Meadow classrooms, omitting various large spaces from the air conditioning recommendation, and postponing the SMS turf field renovation. This newly proposed bond scope provides a lower cost for taxpayers while still doing impactful work across the school district.
The bond will likely remain a key topic for the Board throughout the year. If you have any comments or concerns, please email [email protected]. The full bond proposal is available in the October 6 meeting agenda here.
