The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 last night to capture their NBA Finals victory, defeating the Spurs in five games.

Like many of the matches from this season’s final, this final game was extremely close. The Spurs gained an early lead over the Knicks, and maintained this lead for the first three quarters; nonetheless, the Knicks fought back fiercely, ultimately clutching the victory with a score of 94-90, their first NBA Finals victory in over 50 years, since their last victory in 1973

The game was particularly special for Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson, who scored 45 of the team’s 94 points, ultimately leading the team to their comeback and victory. His tactical decision making and elite body control allowed him to dominate the court, despite his comparatively short height relative to other NBA stars.

Jalen Brunson’s father, Rick Brunson, was also a Knicks player, and played for the Knicks in the NBA Finals in 1999, however lost to the Spurs. They are the first father-son duo in NBA history to play in the NBA finals for the same team. Rick Brunson became the Knicks Assistant Coach in 2022, and has coached his son, Jalen Brunson, who joined the Knicks the same year under a four year $104 million contract.

The Knicks train at the Madison Square Garden (MSG) Training Center, located in Greenburgh, Westchester, NY, which is why many Knicks players have chosen to relocate to Westchester-based homes. Brunson, for example, is a Scarsdale resident, while Josh Hart lives in Tarrytown and Mitchell Robinson in White Plains.

Beyond training in the area, the New York Knicks have a more historic connection to the Westchester area, specifically Scarsdale, where the Knicks held basketball clinics and even played in scrimmages against the Scarsdale High School Basketball Team. On Friday, Feb. 17, 1950, at 8:15PM, the Knicks came to Edgewood for their annual basketball clinic. Several years later, on Friday, Nov. 28, 1958, the Knicks played in a scrimmage with the SHS team, which ultimately resulted in a Scarsdale victory, although it was evident the Knicks were not playing to their full potential.

Watch parties for yesterday’s game were held all around New York City as well as Scarsdale, where families gathered in living rooms to watch the monumental game.

“I watched every game with my family and friends,” Sachin Sasidharan ’27 said. “We were all ecstatic when they won, and we are really proud of our New York team.” Even those who are not regular fans tuned in.

“I normally never watch basketball, but I feel like everyone was watching yesterday,” Sarah Mayer ’27 shared. “The finals really united New York, and I love that.” Fans around the country tuned in to watch their favorite team win the title.

Following the final buzzer, fans flooded the streets of New York City to celebrate the victory. Social media was filled with reactions from longtime supporters, many of whom had never seen the Knicks win a championship in their lifetime.

This historic victory begins a new chapter in NBA history. For Knicks fans across New York, the championship marks the end of a 53-year wait and the beginning of a new era for the franchise. With a championship finally back in New York, fans are already looking ahead to next year’s season, which will begin in mid-late October.
