Varsity B Boys v. Varsity A Girls Soccer Game

No one knows who first instigated the game that is sure to spark a rivalry for the ages. Several weeks into the soccer season, a challenge was issued between the boys of the Varsity B soccer team and the girls of the Varsity A soccer team for a scrimmage to determine which of the two storied programs would reign supreme. A steady stream of banter ensued, with each team extremely confident of their prospects during the game. “There was banter on our side. It wasn’t relevant banter. It was more us saying how much we were gonna beat them by,” said Zach Schwartz ‘18, Varsity B winger. One unnamed Varsity B player was even said to have gone so far as to berate a member of the girls team while the two were at temple.

On a sunny October morning, the day ‘Ders’ fans everywhere had been eagerly awaiting, had finally arrived. The first half was a tense affair. Tackles were made, flip throws were thrown, and ultimately, due to some highly controversial offsides calls, the two teams entered the break level. “We knew that size and speed would be a disadvantage for us, but we were pretty confident that our skills would lead us to victory” said Varsity A soccer prodigy Amanda Ruzumna, 19’. However, the girls were undone early in the second half thanks to two quick Varsity B goals, before eager senior spectators stormed the pitch and began to partake in the intense encounter.

Ultimately, the Varsity B boys reigned supreme, edging the highly competitive encounter 4-1, thanks to a man of the match performance by captain and inspiration, Noam Cherki. “We took it easy because we were in the middle of our season and I promise if we play them again and try we would beat them,” said Varsity A girls captain Sam Mancini ‘19. Leaving an inkling of mystery in the unparalleled rivalry between Scarsdale High School’s two most storied teams.
