Disney released Zootopia 2 on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. Within just a few days, Zootopia 2 became the highest global opening for any animated movie ever with a $556 million dollar Thanksgiving weekend debut. Now, many are probably wondering—is this new movie really that good or only so popular because of its classic prequel? With the former’s appearance in March of 2016, what new insights could the sequel provide—10 years later?
The story begins with a new chapter as Nick joins the Zootopia Police Department and Judy’s police team. However, the pair face difficulties from the Chief of Police, Bogo, who notices that they cannot work together as a team or follow instructions after multiple cases. He puts a reluctant Nick and Judy into partner pet therapy, setting off a chain of hilarious events. Simultaneously, the duo chase a suspicious snake throughout town by infiltrating elite events and uncovering sinister secrets as they go along. The two must decide their fate: identify who to trust or else reap the consequences, especially when competing interests could be involved…
The dynamic between the two main characters evolves between the first two films, and is constantly morphing throughout the second movie. While pursuing adventures, Nick and Judy come to terms with the fact that their relationship has problems, a key aspect left unresolved in the first movie. Nevertheless, as the team becomes intertwined into an ongoing loop of issues, it is part of their responsibility to persist. New characters, like the mayor, the dynastic Lynxley family, and the Desnakes, add an element to the movie that sets it apart from the first, framing a new perspective.
The film discusses many issues including coexistence, political power, corruption, and justice. It would surprise viewers how far back the timeline extends. While we will not disclose too much to avoid spoilers, it is important to take note of the bigger themes at play while watching the movie. Although hidden under a veneer of an animated children’s movie, Zootopia 2 is much like the first movie in the sense that it addresses the big question: is it possible for animals of all different sizes, shapes, and lifestyles to share their habitats and environments without discrimination? In today’s society, this question translates: can people of all different backgrounds, races, ages, and experiences coexist peacefully?
Zootopia 2 is ultimately a compelling, action-packed film. It is quick-paced, hilarious, and ideal for a family movie night. Of course, as an animated film meant for young kids, we initially had our reservations about how entertaining it would be due to this intended audience. However, after seeing the movie, we can confidently say that Zootopia 2 is not only geared towards small children, but is enjoyable to people of all ages. This is especially true with the fascinating change of perspectives that are kept until the final moments of the film. Watch Zootopia 2 in local theaters today!
