It’s that time of the year again, and Scarsdale High School’s winter sports are heating up! This season promises fierce competition, unforgettable moments, and intense school spirit. Scarsdale offers a wide variety of winter sports from basketball to ice hockey and even fencing and bowling. Each team is dedicated to this upcoming season and is ready to make it one to remember!

Determined to head back to the Westchester County Center and win the section as well as bring home a gold ball, the boys’ basketball team is thriving on teamwork and accountability. “This year our team is closer than we have been in years past, and the benefits of that have been showing [so far],” starting center Andrew Roseman ’26 said. With, as Roseman put it, “everyone locked in,” and motivated to do everything they can to win, the basketball team only has a promising season ahead of them.

After last year’s semi-final heartbreak, the hockey team is focused on redemption. “A huge group of returners, and growing closer over the offseason has set us on winning the section this year,” center Ryan Cahmi ’26 expressed. Their strong dynamic and relentless drive make them a team to look out for this season.

The gymnastics team strives for consistent growth and teamwork this season. The gymnastics team brings a supportive and uplifting atmosphere to everything they do, specifically cheering for each other during routines. “This builds confidence within each gymnast, allowing them to perform to their best potential,” Ella Trager ’26 described. With all gymnasts working hard on and off the mat, they are looking to have a wonderful season.

Despite being a new team, the squash team is poised to have a great season. The team is entering this season with a strong focus on winning as many matches as possible, aiming to elevate their game through hard work. However, “at the same time, we want to also have lots of fun because the only way to improve at squash is if we enjoy the game,” captain Dani Naeem ’25 stated. The team has a very friendly and supportive nature which helps create an environment where players are eager to offer advice and learn from one another. The team is looking for seed rankings this season and to improve their seed as the season progresses. With the team being a constant support system for all players and a great space for improvement the season is looking promising.

The indoor track team is warming up for their successful season. Their individual aims are to break their PRs from the last season. Shockingly they’ve already met success: “We’ve broken school records in the relays so far,” Alice Nicassio ’27 mentioned. She also emphasized a benefit of joining the team, stating “You get to be friends with people from all grades and meet a lot of people from other schools at the meets.”

The bowling team is working on growth and teamwork this season. “Our team is working to create an environment where players can improve their skills,” Sammy Goldstein ’26 shared. The bowling team is ready and willing to give this season their all. With the help and support of both the coaches and all teammates the team is ready to work together and perform to the best of their abilities.

The fencing team is lunging forward towards a great season! They’ve only been a varsity sport for two years but have competed in several competitions. “The team looks very good and it’s going to go pretty well,” Drew Kaplan ’26 said. His goal, similar to any other fencer’s aspiration, is to “be a better fencer and learn more complicated stuff like disengaging, as well as winning some matches.” The fencing team has a welcoming atmosphere that can let any athlete improve whether they are mediocre or exceptional. Competitions allow for fencers to showcase their moves by adding to their pool of possible attacks.

Last, but definitely not least, the dancing team is boogieing their way to strong performances in the future! They’ve learned about performances in many different countries while getting closer as a team. “We just finished a piece and I’m excited to perform it very soon,” Ndalo Simelane ’27 mentioned. She expresses herself through movement, bonds with the team on a personal level, and “feels at home” on the dance team. The team’s laid-back atmosphere gives members a sense of comfort while performing. Nevertheless, Walker Lewis ‘27 predicts that “the team will be ramping up soon.” With additional practice throughout the season, the team can reach it’s next level dances. Stay tuned for more performances coming up later this school year!

The girls basketball team, the wrestling team, and the ski team are all aiming for amazing seasons. Focusing on hard work and strong team bonds, these teams are focused on growth, determination and supporting each other.

From basketball to fencing, Scarsdale’s winter sports teams are driven by hard work, teamwork, and a shared determination to excel. With a mix of returning talent, new faces, and strong team dynamics, each team is set up for a season filled with growth and success.
