PC: Scarsdale Speech and Debate

Ali Rothberg

The Scarsdale Invitational, or Scarvite, is a debate tournament hosted by SHS’s Speech and Debate Team every year on the Friday or Saturday of Veterans’ Day Weekend. At Scarvite, everyone on the speech or debate team pitches in to make sure that the weekend runs smoothly. Only novice or first year “debaters” compete in the tournament, and upperclassmen are the judges. For those who don’t fall under either category, setting up and running the tournament whether it be working the concession stand for fundraising, giving directions around the labyrinth that is our school building, or keeping track of rounds, judges, and competitors is their job. For those involved, Scarvite is an opportunity to learn about what teammates experience in a tournament, and for debaters, an opportunity to share their love for the activity. It’s a chance to help out the community that so frequently offers hospitality. Team members think of Scarvite as an experience that strengthens team bonds, and look forward to the weekend every year.
