It can be easy to forget to be festive on Valentine’s day when you are sitting in class listening to your teacher lecture on and on about some unexciting subject. Luckily, your day proves to be far from typical when two students, decked out in red and pink, burst into your classroom and something completely out of the ordinary happens; they start singing love songs!
Every Valentine’s Day Scarsdale High School’s co-ed A Cappella troupe, For Good Measure, spends the day serenading students during class to raise money for competitions. Sing-a-grams have been a tradition at SHS for over a decade and as always, this year was a huge success. The idea is simple yet thrilling; students can anonymously buy sing-a-grams and send them to anyone in the school. For Good Measure’s talented and well rehearsed singers will then visit each classroom, sit the recipient on a chair in front of the class, and personally sing them a love song. With songs ranging from High School Musical’s upbeat “Breaking Free” to Nat King Cole’s classic “L-O-V-E” there is definitely a song for everyone. The only catch is that all the singagrams are completely anonymous, so recipients never know whether it was their best friend or a secret admirer who sent the compliment.
Receiving a sing-a-gram is just as embarrassing as it is flattering. Students certainly get a kick out of watching their classmates turn a Valentine’s Day appropriate shade of red when they are called up. However, the embarrassment quickly changes to joy as everyone smiles and claps along to the singer’s sweet melody. Singagrams are a fun and original way to bring music into the classroom. Students and teachers alike appreciate the spunky music brightening their day. For Good Measure has made Valentine’s day a day to look forward to as the thrill of receiving a sing-a-gram occupies students’ minds all day long.
Whether you are looking to send a message to a secret crush or just looking to listen to some great music in class, sing-a-grams are a great way for students to show how much they appreciate their peers. After a day of watching such spirited musicians perform, Scarsdale High School is buzzing with excitement as everyone eagerly awaits next year’s Valentine’s Day sing-a-grams.
