My Sandwiches Brings All the Students to the Yard

If you have been in the main cafeteria recently, you’ve probably seen the seemingly ‘VIP’ roped off section with the line of students. Do you know what these students are waiting for? Have you ever wondered what attracts the line to that one window?

What used to be behind that window isn’t there anymore. Previously, there had been a milkshake bar that wasn’t open the majority of the time. “We closed it for different reasons, primarily staffing and trying to get the students through the lunch line faster,” says Lisa Randolf, School Lunch Manager. The absence of staff and publicity rendered the milkshake bar unknown to the student body.

It wasn’t until after winter break that the new and improved window attracted groups of stu- dents. The “milkshake” bar had been transformed into a sandwich bar, offering a choice of sandwiches from a list of options (see chart).

The sandwich bar has proved to be extremely successful. Because of its popularity, Randolf is plan- ning to bring back the formerly unnoticed milkshakes to increase sales even more. “When I bring the shakes back the line will be even longer,” Randolf exclaimed.

Although the sandwich bar proves successful for the sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors, the freshman don’t have many opportunities to grab a sandwich. Due to the opening of the Freshman Cafe at the start of the school year in 2013, freshman have been ex- cluded from the food offered at

the main cafeteria. “The ninth grade students don’t get an op- portunity to try it unless they have a free period before lunch,” expressed Randolf. Many fresh- man haven’t even heard of the opening of the sandwich bar. “Being in the freshman cafeteria, we are cut off from what the main cafeteria has to offer. I think the popularity of the sand- wiches in the main cafeteria would follow into the freshman cafeteria. It would make the freshman cafeteria more appealing if we had more and better options to choose from,” stated Dana Papandreadis ’18.

The sandwich bar opens up whole new doors to school cafeteria options. “Changes are coming and with the new addition, (the upcoming building im- provements) I think we can take cafeteria dining to a new level,” declared Randolf. The success of the sandwich bar will hopefully lead to more improvements in the SHS cafeteria.
