Scarsdale High School’s varsity field hockey team has had a strong regular season and is hoping to continue their success during the playoffs starting October 28th. With an 11-5 record, there have been many exciting moments for the team. A big win for the varsity field hockey team was against Bronxville. “I think the highlight of the season was beating Bronxville with no time left on the clock,” stated Captain Erin Nicholas ’17. “Unfortunately, a [Scarsdale] player got her teeth knocked out, but it was still a very exciting moment that made our team even closer.” Along with these many exhilarating moments for the field hockey team, there have been many letdowns and upsetting losses, too. A very disappointing loss for the field hockey team was their second game against their biggest rival, Mamaroneck. “We played great that game,” said Angie Burns ’17. “We played as a team and moved the ball well. Everyone was working together, we just couldn’t finish it off. They’re our biggest rival and defending state champs.” The team took this loss as a learning experience and chance to improve their game. “Mamo knows we can play with them and now we’re hoping to face them once more in Section playoffs” said Burns. Overall, the varsity field hockey team’s successful season gives them confidence to do well in the playoffs and hopefully advance to the section championship. The Raiders had a bye the first round and defeated their first opponent, Clarkstown South, in the second round with an impressive score of 5-0. Peyton Malsch ’16 scored 2 goals and Eliza Brosgol ’16 had 1 goal and 1 assist. Next the Raiders had to beat the #2 seed, Horace Greeley. After an action packed 2 periods the Raiders were tied to the Quakers 1-1, the lone goal scored by Emma Coleman ’17, and the teams were headed to overtime. After another 20 scoreless minutes the teams went to a shootout and Scarsdale was defeated 2-1. Although this was a devastating loss for the Raiders, their successful season will certainly be remembered in a positive light.
