Class Government Elections: Who Is on the Ballot?
October 6, 2021
Throughout the past couple of weeks, Scarsdale High School students have been taping posters up in the hallways and spreading word of their campaigns; that can only mean one thing: election day is upon Scarsdale High School. Class elections will take place on October 7th, but before you cast your ballot consider learning more about the candidates running for office as well as their respective campaigns. After all, a true democracy relies on its citizen to make informed decision on their behalf, so use the information down below to cast well-educated votes. Note: not all candidates are included, but a majority are, especially those who have held office previously.
Karen Becher ‘25 running for Freshman Class House Representative:
Why you should vote for her: “I am organized and responsible so I know I will make a great House Representative. I am eager to hear everyone’s opinions and thoughts to make this school a better place for everyone.”
What her goals are if elected: “One of my main goals for this year is to make sure everyone is involved in this school in something. Whether it is sports, clubs, or having school spirit. It is so important that everyone has an input and a say in this school and I will try my best to make sure that happens. An idea for this year is to have more freshman bonding activities. We should also have more freshman spirit days. This is a great way to get involved in the school community.”
Sophia Garcia ‘23 running for Junior Class House Representative:
Why you should vote for her: “I feel that I’d be a good fit for this position because it’s all about representing the junior class. I connect with various members of the junior class on a daily basis through various activities including clubs and sports and in many different core classes and electives. Through these connections, I observe multiple perspectives within our school and as a result can represent the many needs of different students. As well, I can make sure that the school can benefit from all the creativity that students have to offer. People should vote for me because I am a very dedicated and creative person. I would dedicate myself to incorporating your ideas into the school and making sure that this year we can accomplish as much as possible together. I would not only dedicate myself to incorporating your ideas into the school but I’d hope to incorporate my creativity as well.”
What her goals are if elected: “ Coming from a nothing but normal school year, we need something new to make us feel excited and inspired about this school year and with my new ideas and perspective in student government, I could help to accomplish this. With all the different courses and opportunities our school has to offer, it can be hard to get to know peers that you may not have classes with. Therefore, if I get elected, I would hope to create more community building events for the junior class to encourage school pep and bonding throughout the junior class. Another one of my goals if I’m elected is to unite students over important causes including fundraising movements for instance. I think that we could incorporate fundraising for different causes into community building events. For example we could include ticket sales for some junior class events to raise money for important causes that we all want to support. I think that if we all put our minds to it, there is so much we can accomplish this school year. Lastly, if I’m elected I’d hope to be an aid for student government outreach and encourage others to share their ideas to improve our class government.”
Ellis Geringer ‘24 running for Sophomore House Representative:
Why you should vote for her: “I believe that I would be a good fit for this position because I have participated in Student Government both in 8th and 9th grade. I believe that people should vote for me because I enjoy planning activities and giving my support in whatever needs to be done.”
What her goals are if elected: “My planned goals for this year, if I get elected, would be to create more of the fun and interacting activities with students that we have done in the past such as Pajama Days, Spirit Weeks, e.t.c.”
David Diao ‘23 running for Junior Class President:
Why you should vote for him: “I believe I will be a good fit for the position of Class President since I have two years of experience and have worked to initiate, organize, and facilitate many events. I am dependable, determined, and dedicated, as I mentioned on my posters. I can get things done. Not only do I have the experience to follow through on plans, but we have also taken action already such as our door decorating event planned for October 23rd and other events during the holiday season.”
What his goals are if elected: “The big goal for this year will be to build upon the success of previous years. As a result of Covid restrictions last year, we were only able to get a major in-person event at the end of school, our sophomore movie night. This year, we understand the stress is high for many junior students. That’s why we aim to bring more exciting, in-person events. For example, we plan to have an amazing junior Olympics in the springtime. I look forward to seeing you there!”
Amelia Lane ‘22 running for Senior Class President:
Why you should vote for her: “I think I’d be a good fit for this position because I have a lot of experience. I was in government all of middle school, and I have been my class VP for the past few years. Senior year is really important and I think with my organization skills and dedication I can make it extremely memorable! “
What her goals are if elected: “I know I can make an impact and I am committed to working hard to make every event so enjoyable for everyone. I want our class to finally be able to enjoy a year of somewhat normalcy to the best extent.”
Sora Oba ‘22 running for Senior Class Treasurer:
Why you should vote for her: “As a math enthusiast, I feel that I am capable of taking care of the money we have as a Senior Class, and as a Backstage crew, I enjoy doing behind-the-scenes work!”
What her goals are if elected: “Since I’ve never been in a Student Government before, I am unfamiliar with the role of a Student Government myself. So once elected, my goal is to always be there when needed and to incorporate ideas that have previously been left out, while refining them. I’m excited to learn what it means to be a member of the Student Government!”
Ryan Cahaly ‘22 running for Senior Class Vice President:
Why you should vote for him: “I have spent the last three years as a house representative. I wanted to challenge myself to take on a higher position and be more involved in the planning process of events of high importance such as prom. People should vote for me because I’m a hard worker and will make sure everyone’s ideas are heard and put into place.

Peter Troiano ‘22 running for Senior House Representative:
Why you should vote for him: “I think I would be a good fit for this position because I have had three years of experience in the same position so I know how it works very well. Also, I am a very organized and approachable person which are qualities I believe will help me thrive as a government member. People should vote for me because I really want us to have the best senior year we can since we lost portions of our sophomore and junior years, and I will work hard to make this happen. I have [also] been in government for the past three years.”
What his goals are if elected: “Some of my planned goals are too increase school spirit surrounding sporting events and raider pride weeks and to plan an awesome prom.”
Lizzie Hurshman ‘22 running for Senior Treasurer:
Why you should vote for her: “I’ve been in class government for the first three years of high school and I’ve really enjoyed planning events for my class. Senior year there are two positions for treasurer versus one the other years and I wanted to be more involved this year in government. I’m the treasurer for Amnesty International, so I’ve learned a lot out how to effectively manage funds for clubs.”
