Eastchester @ Scarsdale

The boys varsity volleyball team got its third win of the season on Monday, October 23rd in a home game against Eastchester, winning in 3 straight sets. Scarsdale has won three times, all of which were against Eastchester.

The first set started off even, but Scarsdale soon took a 5 point lead and eventually won the first set 25-17. The second set was the tightest, with Scarsdale and Eastchester fighting over one point-margins until Scarsdale pulled ahead to win 25-21. In the third and final set, Scarsdale got an early lead and ultimately defeated Eastchester 25-11.

Since the Raiders have already played Eastchester, they had experience and time that helped to prepare for Monday’s game. Scarsdale has enhanced their skills over the course of the season, causing their mindset to change and improve as well. “[Our win] definitely had a lot to do with starting off wanting to win, and once we want to win we kind of have that idea of team chemistry and working as a unit,” said captain Steven Wetchler ’18.

The Raiders have become accustomed to Eastchester’s style of play and have gained a strong sense of how to beat them.“As long as we keep on covering the court and getting the ball over and letting them hit the ball out, letting them make communication errors, then we’ll keep on winning these games,” explained captain Jeremy Wolfe ’18.

Even though Eastchester brought many of its own fans all the way to Scarsdale, the home crowd was large enough to out-cheer the opposing school. “It turns out the girls’ [volleyball] game got postponed because their coach wasn’t here, so we had one of the bigger crowds that I’ve seen by luck of the draw,” observed Coach Jim Williams.

Scarsdale @ Clarkstown South

On Tuesday, October 24th, the Raiders traveled across the bridge for their game against Clarkstown South. After their victory on Monday, Scarsdale felt more excited and ready than ever to face a stronger opponent. “I’ve never felt more confident in our team that we can really beat one of these better teams and come out of the season with a real win, which is something I definitely want,” remarked Wolfe after Monday’s game.

Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out so well for Scarsdale as the team lost their sets 3-0 in a frustrating loss against Clarkstown South. The Raiders made more errors in this match than they did in the Eastchester game. “The service errors killed us in the first set,” reflected Williams, noting that Scarsdale was unable to return many serves.

Looking ahead, the team has one more regular season game, which will be against Suffern, and a few more practices before their first playoff game next week.

Their last game of the season is at home, on Thursday, October 26th. Be sure to come out and show them your support!
