Live Free or Bi Hard // Raising Awareness Through Bisexual Visibility Week

Parades, rallies, festivals, and parties are going to all over the streets this week, mostly colored with the usual rainbow of pride and another flag – the pink, blue, and purple striped one. This month marks the 19th anniversary of Bisexual Visibility Day. Celebrated on Freddie Mercury’s birthday, September 23rd, this event recognizes the the bisexual community and members for their activism in the LGBTQ+ movement. Bisexual people are often glossed over, stigmatized, or dwarfed, and this day is very special because it shows that they are important and acknowledged (hence the term “visibility”).
All over the world, the bisexual community will be breaking down barriers one by one, so that someday, bisexual people will be able to come out without fear. Even at SHS, bisexual students are excited to celebrate their empowerment and resilience, shouting loud and proud to be heard everywhere. “I think that usually Scarsdale is very accepting because people are educated,” says Ilana Tamir ‘18, “But while some are accepting and supportive, it is still hard to come out. Maybe one day we can change that.”
