SHS Celebrates Global Citizenship

From practicing a spiritual session of Tai Chi to listening to stories of struggle from North Korean refugees, SHS students had a wealth of events to choose from on the school’s 7th Annual Global Citizenship Day. Classes took a break from their lesson plans last Thursday, October 3 to broaden their worldview with a new perspective on other cultures or to expose themselves to a fresh idea about the problems plaguing communities today. This year, a committee of ten SHS faculty members organized teachers, invited various national and international social advocates, and even worked with some clubs and individual students to present a total of 70 different sessions throughout the day.

SHS also immersed itself into cultural cuisines during the International Lunch that same day as students and staff tried samplings prepared by students and clubs.

Lighthearted lessons taught fun facts and life skills, but many students and teachers were also inspired by the serious stories dealing with inequality and trauma. “Be it surviving Auschwitz or surviving prison, all these heavy topics bring this message of hope, doing for others, and being active in a community, and I think that’s our ultimate goal for Global Citizenship Day. We’re trying to say: hey, look what’s out there, but look at what these people are doing to change it,” explained Heather Waters, SHS Social Studies teacher and head coordinator of Global Citizenship Day.
