Every year, on the Friday before Martin Luther King Jr. day, Scarsdale High School proudly honors Dr. King’s legacy through an aspiring array of song, dance, and spoken word performances. This year, the event will be held on Friday, January 18 in the Brewster Road Commons, bringing together students and faculty in commemoration.
The theme for this year’s commemoration is courage in the face of fear. The theme is meant to highlight the importance of individuals who demonstrate courage in the face of fear, stand firm in their values, and fight for causes greater than themselves in difficult times. This theme reflects Dr. King’s enduring legacy and serves as a powerful reminder of his mission.
“It’s important that Scarsdale High School hosts events such as this one because it brings awareness to important people, and it is also important to celebrate people who have done incredible things for our country and African Americans,” Victoria Roberts ’26 shared. Roberts will be performing three Alvin Ailey dances with the Dance team.
The audience can expect a captivating mix of contemporary pieces, filled with varied voices each echoing the profound influence of Dr. King’s work. “It is to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to keep his mission and work alive, and to have a time to come together, to really commemorate, and to remind ourselves of what his mission was,” faculty member Kathleen McGreal shared.
Alongside the powerful performances, clubs such as GLOW and Human Rights will be selling delicious baked goods and pizza. Students are encouraged to support these clubs during lunch on Friday, recognizing their dedication and hard work.
Hosting events such as this one, McGreal added, “is what makes our high school such a beautiful place.” The event underscores the unity within Scarsdale High School’s community and the countless opportunities for student and faculty engagement.
