With the weather getting warmer and days getting longer, it is clear that winter is giving way to spring. Students know what that means – spring sports are on the horizon! The excitement around spring sports is in full swing, and students are eager to try out and make their teams. Players are buzzing with excitement, and coaches are setting ambitious goals—for good reason. Boys’ lacrosse, girls’ lacrosse, and boys’ tennis are all gearing up to chase success in their own unique ways.
The Raiders boys’ tennis team is set up for success, and returners to the varsity team are more excited than ever. Varsity head coach Jennifer Roane was satisfied with the team’s performance last season but hopes to be even more successful this year. The team lost in the section finals last year to Mamaroneck, so she hopes the team will be crowned champions this spring.

A focal point for the boys’ tennis team this spring is to improve in doubles play. Two of the three singles players are returning, but the doubles team is very important. “We are definitely going to do some doubles clinics; we need to work on our skills between first and second serve, footwork, and communication on the court,” Roane mentioned.
Apart from Roane, players are “absolutely thrilled” to be back on the courts. Nine players are returning to the varsity team, which will include freshmen and seniors this season. The nine returning players are all saying, “This is the year.”
The boys’ lacrosse team, guided by their motto “TOGETHER,” is also eager to return to the field. Head coach James Synowiez wants to be “the best brand of Scarsdale lacrosse we can,” no matter how that may be achieved. A deep roster with new faces coupled with seasoned leaders working hard to establish the continued culture of the team makes for a squad ready to do whatever it takes to win.
“We want to win our league, section, and state,” Synowiez emphasized. Synowiez knows what this team is capable of and is pushing them to reach their full potential. And their motto “TOGETHER” exemplifies this culture, where no player is more important than the next; Synowiez explained how the team didn’t reach their full potential last year and how that can add extra motivation for this spring to be even more successful.
Along with a strong boys’ lacrosse team, girls’ lacrosse is also looking to make an impact this spring. CeCe Berger, the head coach, wants members of the team to be as competitive as they can, while still enjoying their season to the fullest: “My goals are for the players to have a positive experience, as well as learn and improve each week,” Berger mentioned.
Similar to boys’ lacrosse, Berger wants the team to have their own identity and develop together. Helping to develop the team, team leaders are excited and ready to make an impact. “The seniors are doing a great job leading the younger players and setting an example,” Berger explained. The enjoyment of the sport, along with the competitiveness that this season brings, will create even more excitement on the field.
While only three sports were highlighted, Scarsdale has numerous other teams aiming for an unforgettable spring season: baseball, softball, girls’ flag football, crew, golf, track & field, and ultimate frisbee. With all the camaraderie and fun that spring sports bring, it is important to put on your Ders gear, get on the sidelines, and cheer on your classmates this spring!
