From geometric distributions to null hypotheses and chi-squared tests, statistics is a field rich with fascinating concepts. Once considered just another course in students’ jam-packed schedules, AT Statistics has recently captured the attention of SHS students. With the 2024-2025 school year seeing a notable rise in interest, it raises the question: why are so many students drawn to this seemingly complex subject now more than ever?

A major factor contributing to the rise in interest is the increasing relevance of statistics in today’s data-driven world. As fields like business, science, and technology continue to rely on data analysis, students are recognizing the importance of developing these skills early on. This growing demand for statistical knowledge is reflected in the high school’s course offerings. This year, there are seven sections of AT Statistics, each with around 28 to 30 students—a significant increase from an average of four to five sections in previous years.

“In Statistics, we learn how to collect, analyze, and interpret data, which is becoming all the more relevant in today’s technologically driven world,” SHS teacher Christopher Menick, who has been teaching statistics at the high school level for 16 years, shared. Mathematics teacher Daniel Kaye also observed a shift in how students approach statistics. He pointed out that, compared to five or ten years ago, there is now an increased awareness of the importance of numbers: “The world is ever-changing, so being able to use data that is all over the place is something students are going to be more interested in.”

The growing popularity of statistics can further be attributed to its emphasis on practical, real-world applications. Students engage with data sets, analyze trends, and draw conclusions relevant to fields like science, business, and social sciences. “I chose to take [AT Statistics] because I thought it would give me useful insights on the science research I was doing,” Linda Zhang ’26 shared.

Beyond the application of knowledge, statistics encourages creative thinking, offering a unique approach to learning. “In Stats, it’s more thinking outside the box and using the information to make inferences and hypothesize about what’s going to happen,” Kaye explained. “It’s nice that students have the opportunity to think about a question and answer in a way that’s best for them.”

Moreover, the subject’s accessibility appeals to students who might not typically excel in traditional math courses. “Students see [Statistics] as an attractive opportunity to have an AT course on their resume as they’re applying to colleges. It’s open to students—from those taking the highest level math courses to students who maybe have never taken an AT course before,” Menick said. This inclusivity contributes to its increasing popularity, making Statistics a compelling choice for a wide range of students.

Despite its popularity, AT Statistics at SHS is far from an easy class. The course challenges students with complex concepts, including probability distributions, confidence intervals, and regression analysis that require time and effort to master. According to Kaye, relating topics to real-world applications can help students grasp these difficult concepts: “If you can recognize where or how you’re going to use it, it’ll make you more willing to try to use them.” Menick also added that it’s crucial for students to read the textbook, understand the foundational ideas, and practice regularly.

As the world becomes increasingly data-driven, statistics has become an essential skill across nearly every field, with its relevance and importance expected to grow even further. While the subject may be challenging, the knowledge gained through mastering it is incredibly rewarding. Students who take on the challenge of statistics are not only preparing themselves for success in their academic careers but also gaining tools to thrive in a world that relies on data more than ever.
