AltruPrep: Test Prep For A Good Cause

AltruPrep’s website, https://altruprep.com/, features different packages that students can sign up for to purchase practice tests!

AltruPrep is a new fundraising organization that creates practice tests to help students improve their test-taking skills. Named for its two goals, altruism and test preparation, Altruprep aims to help seniors get grants for their freshman year of college by donating the bulk of their proceeds to the PTA Scholarship Fund. As of now, Altru Prep has practice tests for Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics 9 and 10 (Accelerated and Honors), but the website will continue to add more subjects throughout the school year.

“At least for me, AltruPrep started out as my method of studying. Knowing that I could design questions based on our math content made me more confident in my own problem-solving skills,” explained Jeremy Ng ’22, the cofounder of AltruPrep. Working with co-founder Max Trager ’22, Jeremy originally decided to use their practice tests to create a for-profit business. Since the COVID epidemic, however, both Ng and Trager decided to use their business for a good cause. “Our goal, by donating our proceeds to the SHS PTA Scholarship Fund, is to alleviate certain financial pressures on students by giving them grants for their first year of college,” Trager added.

AltruPrep recognizes the importance of education and would like to guarantee it for all students at SHS. “An individual’s education is one of the most important aspects of their life, and often we take it for granted,” explained Trager. The website features individual, per subject, and per grade packages that cater directly to each student’s practice test needs.“Our practice tests are a great studying resource, in that they provide high-caliber questions which serve to mimic the testing environment, something you just don’t get when going over homework or classwork,” Trager added. In order to maintain transparency, the business also includes a charity breakdown chart, which describes where the proceeds go.

Even though the website is currently up and running, creating a business during a global epidemic posed many challenges. Ng and Trager spent countless hours during the summer reviewing different subjects, creating the website, and designing practice tests. “While designing the website was simply tedious, one major issue was preventing pirating. It would be painfully easy to just send the PDFs from the tests to group chats, and there would be no way to control it,” explained Ng. “We hope that no one will actually freeload because the proceeds DO go to the SHS PTA Scholarship Fund,” he added.
