SHS Cheerleaders Go to Nationals
February 27, 2020
Earlier this month, SHS’s Varsity and JV cheerleading teams took their spirit and cheered to Orlando, Florida to attend the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship. Back in December, both teams received bids at the Regional Competition to compete at the national competition.
The Thursday night they arrived, both SHS teams along with over a hundred other teams from all around the United States arrived in Orlando. The next morning, the teams practiced outside their hotel, the All-Star, and then attended an orientation where they learned about the rules of the competition. Afterward, they spent the rest of the day riding roller coasters and taking photos with characters all around the Magic Kingdom park.
On Saturday morning, Varsity competed while JV watched them. At around noon, the Varsity team screamed with joy as they found out they made it to the semi-finals. JV then competed at around four o’clock and placed 12 out of 12 teams. Varsity competed again that same night and dropped finals, ranking 16th place in the small varsity division 1. “We were so excited to qualify for semifinals for the 3rd year in a row and to place 16th out of the 75 teams in our division. Although at semis we did not execute the performance that we’d wanted, our performance at prelims was representative of the hard work that our team put in this season. Our coaches and mentors agree that we left a beautiful and strong routine on the mat. We managed to come together and peak at the right time through all of the ups and downs, blood, sweat, and tears that the season had brought so far,” commented varsity cheerleader, Aiyana Lebron ’20.
On Sunday night, both teams watched finals and closed their day at Epcot park. Another great season of SHS cheerleading came to a close as the teams were proud of their accomplishments. “There were lots of lessons to be learned this season as a team and as individual cheerleaders. We are now able to embrace those lessons and are moving forward to make the Scarsdale cheerleading program even stronger,” said Lebron.
