SHS math teacher Laura Estersohn set to retire after twenty-three years.

Over the span of twenty-three years, SHS math teacher Laura Estersohn has taught nearly every math course, leaving students with more knowledge and a greater appreciation for mathematical and statistical concepts. Combined with this thought-provoking atmosphere, Estersohn has also created one that allows students to feel comfortable asking questions, seek help, and find enjoyment in her class. “Ms. Estersohn created such a welcoming and supportive environment in her classroom, and made Statistics such an enjoyable course,” remarked Phoebe Shearer ‘21.

Throughout distance learning, Estersohn has created in-depth videos for new concepts, initiated insightful discussions on Zoom, and shared resources for further exploration. “Despite a lack of in-person interaction, Ms. Estersohn continued to effectively prepare us for the AP Statistics Exam through the use of thought-provoking programs and fun activities,” added Emily Aaron ‘21. AT Statistics has been Estersohn’s favorite course to teach, as she believes it is interesting, engaging, and fun. “With statistics, you develop key skills to understand the world. You learn how to deal with uncertainty and evaluate situations in a rational, measured way.”

Her work at SHS may be concluding, but Estersohn plans to continue adding value to her community. “I have been a reviewer of statistics textbooks and I would like to continue that. I want to work with volunteer civic organizations that encourage people to vote,” Estersohn expressed. Exploring New York City is a favorite activity of hers, and she hopes to resume visiting different neighborhoods, touring museums, and admiring theaters. After enriching the lives of so many students, Estersohn would like to enrich herself with new information outside of her field.  “I have never read The Odyssey, and want to take an online course in Masterpieces of World Literature.” Most of all, Estersohn is looking forward to spending more time with her family, grandchildren, and friends. However, she will certainly miss teaching at SHS. “I have been so proud of the students during the past few months. They have worked hard and shown how much they really care about learning. I also have great colleagues to learn from and collaborate with,” Estersohn concluded.
