Scarsdale’s very own sustainable fashion club is here! Going by the name “Up-2-D8,” this new club strives to find innovative ways to lessen the waste of excess fabric in the clothing industry and to promote sustainability through fashion. Jenny Kahn ’21 founded the club this year to help educate students on the business practices of the global fashion industry and how to make more sustainable choices in their own lives, whether it be by choosing brands that use ethical practices or by up-cycling, which is the process of turning unwanted products into ones that are better quality or more functional. “Cheap clothes, which many students purchase, are easier to buy and throw away, which is why we thought this was an issue that Scarsdale students could address in their daily lives,” said vice president Felicity Huang ’20.

During meetings, club members work to collect old clothing and brainstorm ideas on how to redesign and upcycle the donated garments. “By reinventing old clothing, our club creates more fashionable clothing that appeals to teens and young adults,” said Kahn. By using sewing machines and producing the redesigned clothing themselves, students can see their own clothing designs come to life. By the end of the year, Kahn and Huang hope to host a fashion show in which they will need people who can help with graphic design, music, lighting, photography, videotaping, modeling, and social media advertising. All proceeds collected by this club will go to “Kids Kloset,” an organization that works to provide clothing to underprivileged kids.

If you are interested in joining, Up-2-D8 meets every Monday at 3pm in room 276. For further information or questions, send an email to [email protected]
