Global Citizenship Day was a schoolwide event on October 4th meant to engage the students of Scarsdale in learning about the world around them, and spread awareness about topics that may not be known in our Scarsdale bubble. The day was packed full of various events and presentations, some fun and others meant to bring attention to topics affecting the world today. Some events were physical, like yoga, taught by English teacher Jennifer Rosenzweig, and were aimed at aiding with stress caused by school and other various factors. One of the most widely talked about event was the LiNK speech. Two North Korean refugees, Ilyoung Ju and Geum Hyok Kim, visited and spoke about their experiences escaping the oppression of Kim Jong Un and their current lives. Many presentations targeted current issues in the world, raising awareness and engaging Scarsdale students into discussions. “I was part of the Young Democrat and Young Conservatives civil discourse where we had a discussion in front of two classes and we had a very informative talk about different issues on gun control, healthcare, and immigration…it was interesting and different,” Andrew Morin ’20 commented. By using a full day to address many of these problems in the world, Global Citizenship Day gave Scarsdale students an opportunity to discuss current world problems and situations outside of any classes.
