In light of the recent upward trend in gender equality awareness, it is no wonder that organizations have been founded to support the cause. One such institution is the Jagori International Club at SHS, a branch of an Indian organization Jagori. Riya Gupta ’20 and Max Yang ’20 founded the club this year to help Jagori empower Indian women. “After learning about the gender inequality, malnutrition, and abuse that girls go through in India, we felt compelled to make a change. My family already knew people who worked for Jagori and they told us that they needed funding, so we decided to create this club,” said Gupta. During meetings, members discuss ways to raise money to help the village Jagori is based in and plan times to Skype the villagers to teach them about gender discrimination and how to overcome it. They are also contemplating selling various homemade goods and jewelry made by the villagers as an alternative fundraising method next year.

The club is actively seeking new members as well. “We want our club to grow, as well as make sure that everyone’s opinions and ideas are heard. If you want to have an input into the fundraising and ideas for the organization, and you are passionate about gender equality, you should join,” said Gupta.

Jagori International meets in Room 373 on Friday mornings.
