This past Thursday marks the fourth week of the new Scarsdale farmer’s market in the Village. Spearheaded by market manager Corinna Makris, the farmer’s market has been a resounding success for the past few weeks, attracting over a dozen vendors and getting a large portion of the Scarsdale community to come out and purchase local produce.

I visited the market a couple weeks ago and found it busy with community members, mostly adults but a few children as well. By running from 12pm to 7pm every Thursday, unlike the more traditional weekend markets, more people are able to find the time to visit. “People are really happy to have a weekday farmer’s market during daytime hours,” Makris commented. “If you have kids, sometimes it’s hard to get out on weekends, so this gives people another option. It’s a really good event for bringing people together from around town to just enjoy the Village of Scarsdale.” In addition to strolling through the market, visitors will often meet up with friends, visit other stores in the village, thereby supporting more local businesses, and simply enjoy the beautiful fall weather.

With a multitude of vendors, the market offers a range of produce and other goods. While visiting, I spotted cheese, bread, and mozzarella stands, as well as vendors specializing in olive oil and honey. In addition to food, there was a knife sharpening service, handmade bags, and cheery live music to set the mood. Every stand I visited was staffed with extremely friendly people who readily talked about where their food came from and offered detailed descriptions (and samples!) of their produce.  Looking around, I saw visitors strolling through both the market and the rest of the village, meeting up with friends, and sampling the foods. “I think the farmer’s market does so much for our village!” said Scarsdale resident Amy Nadasdi. “Not only does it provide an amazing selection of local, organic, and fresh products, it supports local small businesses that are participating in the market and helps bring people to the village. You get to see your neighbors and friends, hear great music, and spend some time in the village.”

If it continues to be successful, the market hopes to continue running every week for a while longer into the fall. Scarsdale students, their families, and all others are encouraged to come enjoy the local businesses, fresh produce, and Scarsdale community!
